Sam Durham is drum tutor and working session drummer. He believes firmly that his students should learn how to play drums by using popular tracks from the Open Mic Movement’s “National Curriculum” as learning material. He also believes that a drummer can become a great drummer with plenty of live experience with other musicians.
Sam is unique as he has two years experience as a Qualified Primary School Teacher, as well as being a Grade 8 Trinity Drum Kit Player. He holds a DBS check.
Using his wealth of recording and live experience, he teaches a variety of drummers from absolute beginners to the more advanced players. Having taught 7 years old right up to 70 years old, he proves that drumming really is for all ages! No matter what your level or age, Sam believes it is live performance that really accelerates learning, but this is with the caveat that live performance isn’t compulsory – he is guided by his student’s needs always.
Being a great drummer is about listening and adapting to the musicians around you. With a basic understanding of a set of songs and live non-pressurised jam sessions, Sam develops a drummer to be creative, confident and appreciate the joy of ‘leading a band from the back’.
Sam has learnt the importance in having accessible live playing opportunities through his 16 years as a drummer. From the age of 13, Sam formed various bands at school and played in shows. This was where he believes he truly developed his showmanship and mastery of the instrument.
Sam teaches in Hertford at River City Studios. With a choice between 30 minutes and 1 hour lessons.
